The best breeding horses in history

19 Jun 2012 - 21:09
By far the greatest horses were assessed after the year 2000

When the most talented horses of all times are examined a total of 23 horses have received a score of 9.0 for talent and amongst those were one gelding,  6 mares and 16 stallions.  Only one stallion out of Iceland has received a score higher than 9.00 and this was Garri frá Reykjavík....

The highest assessed horse which was not born in Iceland is Prins frá Knutshyttan who has a total score of 8,81.

From the most beautiful horses of all times a total of 28 horses have received a score of 8.70 or higher for conformation and of those two of them have received a score of 9.0. Those horses are Goði frá Þóroddsstöðum and Díva frá Gategården.  Most of these beautiful horses were born her in Iceland or a total of 20 but three were born in Sweden, two in Norway, two in Denmark and one was born in France.

So when the total score is examined, it is clear that a total of 16 horses have received a score of 8.70 or higher. In that group, there were a total of 5 mares and 11 stallions. Out of these horses, a total of three were born here in Iceland, two in Sweden and one in Denmark.

From this it becomes clear that the leading horses are here in spite of the fact that a considerable amount of top quality breeding horses have been sold to other countries. But when it is examined when those horses were assessed, it is interesting to see that the highest conformation assessments happen during the years 1962 to 1974 and the greatest part is after the year 2000. So when the highest scores for talents are examined, it becomes evident that all the horses who have received a score higher than 9.00 were assessed in the year 2000 or later, not counting the assessment of Rauðhetta frá Kirkjubæ who received her highest assessment at Landsmót in 1994. This clearly shows that there have been great improvements in horse breeding here during the past 10-15 years.

Like most people are aware, Spuni frá Vesturkoti has received the highest assessment for talent which has ever been given a score of 9,25 as well as the highest total score which was 8,92. But last spring,  Hrannar frá Flugumýri II received the fifth highest score for talent in history as well as the fourth highest total score ever, a score of 8,85. Two of the highest total scores in history have been given at Lansmót and then the question is whether a new record will be set at Landsmót of 2012 in Reykjavík?
